How do you calculate shipping?
We have a flat charge of $5.95 for all orders
under $75 dollars. If your order is over $75 your shipping is free! If you have any questions about a specific item, please contact us directly by email: info@sageyarnandgifts.com
or phone: (508) 457-9513
Do things ever go on sale?
Yes, they do.
Online sales will be announced ahead of time, though since we just launched this website we don’t have any schedule set up. Be sure to check out our bargain bin page for
special deals posted year-round. In-store we have a
weekend sale during that really big, final football game in February (the name
is trademarked now!). We also participate
in the annual street fair with a sidewalk sale on Main St. in Falmouth every July. If you want advance notice of anything going
on with the store, signing up for our newsletter is your best bet!
Can I order something that's out of stock?
Yes – contact us directly by email: info@sageyarnandgifts.com
or phone
508-457-9513. When you contact us about the item, we’ll check on it’s availability with our supplier and then advise you accordingly.
Can I order something that you’ve never carried?
With most of our product lines we do not special order items we don’t already carry. Please contact us about your item, though, and see if we can do something for you. Email: info@sageyarnandgifts.com
Do you take items on consignment?
We do not currently take items on
consignment. We occasionally consider
new products for sale but only on a wholesale-retail business arrangement.
Why do you have what you have?
We have what we have because we LOVE it. We have a variety of gifts and yarns due to
the variety of tastes in our owners and employees. In fact, there are so many things we see that
we love we can’t stock them all!
When is the best time to visit Cape Cod?
We think Cape Cod is
charming year-round :-) But seriously,
the four seasons on Cape each provide different scenery and activities to delight and entertain you. There is something for everyone with
historical sites, the national seashore, the beaches and campgrounds, the opera, musical acts, fine dining, theatrical works and artists from Provincetown to Bourne. Check the Falmouth Chamber of
Commerce website for listings of accommodations, restaurants, events, shopping and more!
Why do you have a website?
We love our customers!
After some time of selling at our brick-and-mortar store on Main Street in Falmouth, we realized that a lot of our customers are flying out to warmer climes in the winter. Why not put up a website so you can shop from
Florida or Arizona?
A lot of other nice people we meet love our store but are only in town
for a short time. Why not put up a
website so you can shop when you get home?
My
personal favorite reason for a website is in the sharing of information. Sometimes my brain is a little slow and I
forget to tell you about something when you are in the store. But if we have a website, you can get that
information I forgot to say (plus you can check out our items from the comfort
of your own home).
How many stitches do I cast on/chain for a [blank] in this
yarn?
This is a very specific question that depends on many
variables. The short answer is to
determine the number of stitches per inch you produce in your stitch pattern,
multiply by the dimension of the thing you are making. For sweaters and things, shaping might get in
the way, but here’s what to do for anything that is a rectangle (scarf,
blanket, coaster, etc.):
Stitches
per inch x inches wide = your cast on #

How much yarn do I need to make [blank]?
This is a tough one to estimate. I like to go by Ann Budd’s handy Yarn
Requirements charts but if you can’t get one/don’t want to buy one, I check
patterns similar to the one I want to make from my head and estimate from
there. If you know the dimensions of a
small project, we’re pretty good at estimating # of skeins for you – give us an

Always buy
more yarn than you think you need! This
is not so we can take advantage of you and make an additional bit of
money. This is to SAVE YOU from
yourself. To make a whole sweater or
afghan and get to the end and be 2 inches short… and your color has
discontinued since you bought it last year….
It makes a knitter/crocheter want to sob uncontrollably into his or her
wool. Unless you are very flexible about
adding in a different yarn if you run out, buy an extra ball or two.
Will you photocopy a pattern for me?
No. It would be
breaking the law and we’re just not that rebellious.
Can I photocopy patterns?
If you have purchased a pattern you can photocopy a
“working” copy of your pattern. Maybe
you don’t want to mark up your original or maybe the original is in a book that
you don’t want to carry around.
Sometimes you need to enlarge the print or a chart that’s too small to
read. It’s ok, as long as you have the
original and don’t give the photocopy to anyone else.
For almost
all other situations, you’re not allowed to photocopy your pattern. Please check out these copyright resources
for answers to your copy questions:

How do I take care of my yarn?
Check the label that came with your yarn for the
manufacturer’s recommended cleaning methods.
If you want to try something different than what they recommend – make a
swatch and do something else! You never
know ‘til you try.
Why is there grass in my yarn?
Most of the time, yarn companies employ a manufacturing
process that includes removing grass, leaves and other debris from their
fiber. Each company is different and
while we don’t have many yarns that will have grass in it, you might find some
in yarn from Noro or Malabrigo. This is
not a flaw in the yarn and is normal for those companies. If you are unhappy with it, you may take
advantage of our 30-day return policy for your unopened yarn.
Why does my yarn smell?
Wool smells like wool. Alpaca smells like alpaca. If you’re reading this FAQ your yarn probably
smells like vinegar and you’re surprised.
Vinegar is used in the dying process to help the dye stick to the fiber;
without it, the vibrant shades wouldn’t be possible. When the yarn comes in the store we keep it
in its plastic bag so it doesn’t get a chance to really air out. I can tell you from experience that the smell
goes away – if not in the time it takes you to knit/crochet it, then in the
initial blocking or washing of your garment.
If you are really unhappy with it, you may take advantage of our 30-day
return policy. We LOVE vinegary
Malabrigo and wouldn’t keep it around if we didn’t think it was worth it!
What happens when I knit with the square needles or crochet
with the square crochet hooks?
Switching from one needle or hook to another
might change the tension of your project.
Make a swatch to see how it changes and adjust your stitch count or
needle size accordingly. Most people who
have tried them say they are just about the same as their regular needles and
hooks only more comfortable to use.
Am I allergic to [blank]?
I don’t know.
Want to test for it? Take a
strand of the yarn and tie it around your wrist. If you don’t have a reaction right away,
leave it for a day or two and see what happens.
No reaction – you’re all set! Some
people who were allergic to wool years ago aren’t allergic to the newer, more
processed yarns or the fine merinos and alpacas.
How do I substitute yarns?
When you substitute yarns for a specific project you want to
find something that produces the same gauge as the original (necessary to
produce the size garment you want) and has a similar drape to it. For example, if the original was a slippery
yarn and you substitute fluffy wool, your fabric will have a completely
different character and will hang differently.
Try to use good judgment and definitely knit or crochet a swatch (and
observe its behavior… is it rebellious? Or does it behave the way you want it
to?)

Will Sage sell the sample garments?
Occasionally – we’ll let you know when, and
which ones. If you have a question about
one, send us an email: info@sageyarnandgifts.com
Will someone at Sage knit something for you?
Maybe. I (Jen) do knit or put together projects for a commission but I can't promise anything until we've chatted/emailed about it. Email: info@sageyarnandgifts.com
with your project idea and ask for more information :-)
